Cornyn and Paxton Locked in Dead Heat as Gun Rights Take Center Stage in Texas Senate Race

The Texas GOP primary for U.S. Senate has officially become a political dogfight.

According to a new Emerson College poll released last week, embattled incumbent Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) and Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) are locked in a statistical dead heat—30% to 29% respectively—with a whopping 37% of Republican primary voters still undecided.

But beneath the topline numbers lies a political earthquake: for the first time, Paxton now leads Democrat Colin Allred in a hypothetical general election matchup, narrowly edging him out 46% to 41%.

Previously, Cornyn had leaned heavily on general election viability as his sole remaining argument for why conservatives should overlook his troubling legislative record.

That argument may no longer hold water.

Paxton’s Rise: Fueled by Gun Owners and Grassroots Anger

Ken Paxton’s campaign is not only riding a wave of grassroots support—it’s powered by it.

His full-throated defense of the Second Amendment has earned him the backing of National Association for Gun Rights PAC, its state affiliate, Texas Gun Rights PAC, as well as the Gun Owners of America.

“When Biden’s ATF tried to impose background checks on private sales, it was Ken Paxton who sued to stop them,” said Texas Gun Rights President Chris McNutt. “Meanwhile, Cornyn was busy helping Biden pass gun control.”

Indeed, Paxton’s 100% pro-gun record and his pledge to repeal red flag laws, abolish the ATF, and roll back the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) have cemented his position as the clear favorite among gun owners.

Cornyn’s Denial Sparks Online Firestorm

Just days ago, Cornyn lit up conservative media after claiming—on social media platform X—that he did not remember working with Democrats to pass Biden’s gun control legislation in 2022.

The exchange began when Cornyn accused Paxton of “shooting blanks” in the race. Texas Gun Rights fired back with a pointed reply:

“Speaking of shooting, do you remember when you teamed up with Biden to spearhead gun control legislation?”

Cornyn’s one-word answer—“No”—triggered a digital stampede.

Thousands of users posted screenshots, roll call votes, and video clips of Cornyn proudly standing next to Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) to celebrate the passage of BSCA, a bill that partially closed the “boyfriend loophole,” expanded background checks for young adults, and funded red flag laws in states nationwide.

Even Joe Biden thanked Cornyn by name from the White House on June 25, 2022, during a celebratory press conference marking the bill’s passage.

Texas AG Paxton responded with a viral “Pepperidge Farm Remembers” meme, and many commentators compared Cornyn’s denial to the kind of memory lapses President Biden has become infamous for.

Rumors Swirl About Wesley Hunt — But the Math May Not Add Up

Adding further intrigue, D.C. insiders report that Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) is still mulling a potential entry into the Senate race.

Some believe Hunt, a rising star in GOP circles, could offer a “unity candidate” alternative capable of winning both the primary and general election.

But with Paxton now tied with Cornyn and leading Allred head-to-head, that logic may be falling apart.

To make matters more complicated, Hunt has reportedly tried—unsuccessfully—to secure the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, who has so far declined to weigh in.

Trump remains extremely popular with Texas GOP primary voters, holding a 73% approval rating in the same Emerson poll.

Texas Gun Rights Vows to Keep the Heat on Cornyn

With the Texas Senate race emerging as one of the most watched contests of 2026, gun rights groups are sharpening their focus.

“This is a top race of interest for Texas Gun Rights,” said McNutt. “We are going to make sure every pro-gun Texan knows about John Cornyn’s decades of betrayal—from spearheading the NICS gun registry expansion to funding Biden’s ATF to championing the largest gun control bill in over 30 years.”

And with nearly four in ten GOP voters still undecided, there’s plenty of ground left to fight over.

Gun owners may soon have the final say on whether Cornyn’s career ends with a whimper—or a political headshot delivered by a rising pro-gun champion in Ken Paxton.
