“Safe Students Act” Would Repeal Failed Gun-Free School Zones Law

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has once again filed the Safe Students Act, legislation that would finally repeal the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 — a law that has turned America’s classrooms into soft targets for criminals while leaving teachers, staff, and parents defenseless.

A Law That Never Worked

The Gun-Free School Zones Act (GFSZA) was championed by then-Sen. Joe Biden and signed into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1990.

At the time, its supporters claimed banning firearms within 1,000 feet of a school would make children safer.

But the numbers tell a different story.

Since 1950, 94% of mass public shootings have occurred in so-called “gun-free zones.”

Instead of stopping violence, the GFSZA created killing fields where criminals know they’ll face no armed resistance.

Far from protecting students, the law advertised schools as target-rich environments for mass shooters.

Massie’s Solution

Massie’s Safe Students Act would wipe the 1990 law from the books and return authority to states, local governments, and school boards to decide firearms policy.

Rather than Washington bureaucrats mandating helplessness, communities could craft solutions that actually keep kids safe.

“Gun-free zones are ineffective and make our schools less safe,” Massie has long argued. “It’s time we end this deadly delusion.”

Texas Gun Rights: Full Support

Texas Gun Rights (TXGR) is throwing its full support behind Massie’s bill. The group has long opposed federal mandates that disarm law-abiding citizens while doing nothing to stop killers intent on mayhem.

TXGR President Chris McNutt didn’t mince words:

“The Gun-Free School Zones Act was Joe Biden’s brainchild — back when he at least had some cognitive function — and like everything else he’s touched, it’s been a complete disaster. This law disarmed good guys, empowered killers, and left our kids as sitting ducks. Thomas Massie’s Safe Students Act is long overdue, and Texas Gun Rights proudly stands behind it. The Second Amendment doesn’t end at the schoolhouse gate — and we won’t stop fighting until this unconstitutional travesty is repealed.”

For 35 years, Washington politicians have clung to the failed promise of gun-free zones.

But the reality is undeniable: criminals don’t follow signs, and children are safest when law-abiding Americans are free to exercise their Second Amendment rights.

Massie’s Safe Students Act represents a return to common sense — and a chance to finally put an end to the dangerous experiment that has cost too many innocent lives.
