Republican victories in the 2024 election cycle have put the Second Amendment community in a strong position to move public policy in a pro-gun direction. With a Republican in the White House in Donald Trump and Republicans in control of both chambers of Congress, there is simply no excuse for pro-gun legislation to not be brought to a public roll vote, much less be signed into law.
Contrary to what the corporate media say, the American public strongly believes in the right to bear arms and wants its elected officials to keep these rights intact, if not expand them. According to a recent poll carried out by McLaughlin & Associates, 76% of poll respondents indicated that it is “important” for the incoming Trump administration to nominate and confirm pro-gun judges at the federal level. Furthermore, 77% of poll respondents signaled that political leaders in Congress supporting the right to bear arms is also “important.”
When asked if respondents believe that “President Donald Trump will make it a priority to protect and defend the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners,” 63% of respondents responded in the affirmative.
With respect to which party voters believe would do a better job of defending the Second Amendment, 59% of voters signaled their support of Republicans, whereas 24% indicated their support of Democrats. Indeed, Republicans have a clear mandate with Trump winning the popular vote and Republicans taking back the Senate, while maintaining control of the House. But it’s not a given they will do the right thing once they start casting votes in Congress.
Republicans would be wise to not squander this once-in-a-generation opportunity. Americans are clear in their desire for pro-gun public policy. The success of Constitutional Carry over the last decade coupled with Republican strong performance at the polls in the 2024 election cycle demonstrates that the liberalization of gun laws is not a fringe concept whatsoever. In fact, voters expect Republicans to continue delivering the goods on Second Amendment issues.
For too long, Republicans have dragged their feet in protecting our God-given rights. Some have even betrayed their constituents by siding with anti-gun Democrats to pass gun control. Eventually, grassroots voters took matters into their own hands and started turning up the heat on their elected officials. Such grassroots lobbying efforts started at state legislatures nationwide, with red states embracing Constitutional Carry one after the other over the last two decades. This momentum eventually translated into a big electoral victory this past November.
The political winds are blowing in a pro-gun direction, but now is not the time to rest on our laurels and become complacent. It’s time to go on offense and make sure congressional Republicans pass pro-gun legislation. To ensure Second Amendment dreams become realities, we must place relentless pressure on our elected officials in Congress. Those who drag their feet, or worse yet, sell out gun owners, must be punished during primary season. Political misbehavior must always be met with castigation on social media and eventually the polls.
The American people have spoken and they demand bold leadership, no matter how controversial it may be
