Cornyn Burns $100 Million to Tie Paxton & Scrambles Over the Filibuster

Texas voters just delivered a brutal reality check to one of the most entrenched politicians in Washington.

After burning through nearly $100 million trying to bury Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate, Senator John Cornyn still couldn’t win outright — barely edging Paxton and forcing the race into a runoff.

Let that sink in.

Cornyn spent a political fortune.

Paxton spent just $4.4 million.

And the result?

A virtual tie.

For gun owners across Texas, the reason couldn’t be clearer.

Ken Paxton is a grassroots favorite and a proven pro-gun champion.

John Cornyn is a career politician and longtime swamp operator whose record on the Second Amendment has followed him like a dark cloud for years.

The Most Anti-Gun Republican in the U.S. Senate

Cornyn wasn’t just another Republican who occasionally compromised.

He was the chief Republican negotiator behind the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act — the most significant federal gun control legislation passed in decades.

That bill opened the door for billions in taxpayer funding for gun confiscation programs and expanded federal involvement in so-called “red flag” proceedings that allow guns to be seized before someone has even been convicted of a crime.

Gun owners across Texas didn’t forget.

And no amount of Washington money was enough to make them forget.

That’s why, despite nearly $100 million in spending, Cornyn couldn’t close the deal.

Instead, the race now heads to a runoff — a humiliating position for one of the most powerful Republicans in the U.S. Senate.

Cornyn Panders to Trump

But what’s happened since the primary may be even more revealing.

With President Trump’s endorsement looming over the runoff, Cornyn has suddenly begun pandering hard to Trump and conservative voters in ways that would have been unthinkable just months ago.

The most obvious example came after Ken Paxton called Cornyn’s bluff on the SAVE Act — legislation backed by President Trump that would require proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.

Paxton challenged Cornyn directly.

If securing America’s elections is truly the priority, Paxton said, Senate Republicans should be willing to change the Senate rules to pass the bill immediately.

The move forced Cornyn into an awkward corner.

For years, Cornyn defended the Senate filibuster as a key institutional safeguard.

But now, suddenly facing a conservative challenger who exposed the weakness in his political positioning, Cornyn has been scrambling to reposition himself as a reliable Trump ally.

Why Texas Gun Rights Supports the Filibuster

In short, Paxton forced Cornyn to start pretending to be more conservative than he has been in his entire career.

And while Texas Gun Rights believes passing the SAVE Act is absolutely critical to securing our elections and protecting the Republic, we do not support destroying the Senate filibuster to get there.

The filibuster remains one of the few procedural safeguards preventing radical anti-gun politicians in Washington from ramming through sweeping gun control legislation with a simple majority vote.

Without the filibuster, a future anti-gun Congress could pass:

• National gun registration
• Bans on commonly owned firearms
• Federal gun licensing schemes
• Nationwide red flag confiscation laws

All with 51 votes.

Gun rights would be one election away from disaster.

That’s why Texas Gun Rights agrees with groups like National Association for Gun Rights and Gun Owners of America that preserving the filibuster is essential to protecting the Second Amendment.

Destroying it today could empower the gun confiscation lobby tomorrow.

A Political Master Class from Paxton

But make no mistake: Ken Paxton’s challenge was still a political master class.

By forcing Cornyn to publicly confront the issue, Paxton exposed exactly what grassroots Texans already suspected:

When pressured by a conservative challenger, John Cornyn magically begins sounding very different than he has during his decades in Washington.

For years Cornyn assumed Texas voters would simply accept the status quo.

This election proved otherwise.

The grassroots are awake.

And the political establishment is nervous.
