In the wake of the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Dec. 4, 2024, Democrats in the United States Congress have wasted no time in calling for the imposition of regulations and outright bans on so-called ghost guns.
Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-MI) was one of the most vocal proponents of taking action against the ghost gun boogieman. In a post she published on X on Dec. 13, Scholten declared “If you can’t pass a background check, there’s a reason. If you’re buying or building a ghost gun to get around that, THERE’S A REASON. Ghost guns have no place in our communities — so let’s find common ground in common sense and take action now.”
Ghost guns are essentially homemade firearms that can be assembled from a parts kit, usually an 80% kit. Though some of the parts can be made, and sometimes even are, via 3D printing. 3D printable firearms are one of the primary bugaboos of the gun control crowd, and this latest killing presents another opportunity for Gun Control Inc. to go on another fearmongering campaign to ban this category of firearms.
The interesting part is that the alleged assassin Luigi Mangione , who used a 3D-printed firearm to kill Thompson, was able to pass a background check in order to live in a “co-living” space, Surfbreak, in the Honolulu, Hawaii neighborhood of Waikiki.
Scholten was first elected in 2022 and has hit the ground running as one of the Democrats’ newest generation of gun controllers. Pro-civilian disarmament organization GIFFORDS has recognized her talent as anti-gun advocate and were ecstatic about her re-election victory on Nov 5, 2024.
“Congresswoman Hillary Scholten has proven herself to be a true champion for Michigan families and a steadfast advocate for gun violence prevention,” boasted former Arizona Congresswoman and GIFFORDS founder Gabby Giffords. “Having experienced the devastating impact of gun violence in her own community, Representative Scholten brings a deeply personal understanding to this fight. As a mother and former Justice Department attorney, she knows that commonsense gun safety measures are essential to keeping our communities safe. Her dedicated work on the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and her unwavering support for universal background checks and getting ghost guns off our streets demonstrates the kind of courageous leadership West Michigan needs. I am thrilled to congratulate Congresswoman Scholten on her reelection and I look forward to continuing our work together to build a safer America for all.”
Scholten will be one figure to look out for as the anti-gun Left grows more unhinged in the years to come. Pro-gun lobbies such as the National Association for Gun Rights understand what’s at stake in these discussions about regulating ghost guns. In an X post it published in response to the Michigan congresswoman’s anti-gun invective, it countered with the following:
“Building your own firearm has nothing to do with background checks.
The vast majority are owned by hobbyists and high end builders. Even within crime guns they make up a fraction of those seized.
Also, making a gun that you have no idea exists illegal is useless and idiotic.”
Building firearms in one’s home has been an integral fixture of the American experience that dates back to the early days of the settlement of the original 13 colonies. That tradition has continued to the very present, albeit with technological updates such as 3D printing in the present. All of this has occurred without causing any meaningful surge in crime, much less mass civil unrest.
At the end of the day, attacking “ghost guns” is just another way for the gun control crowd to gin up anti-gun hysteria and condition the population into embracing gun control. After losing control of the federal government after the 2024 elections, Gun Control Inc. is desperately looking for any angle to attack the Second Amendment.
