Texas Democrats are trying to sell State Rep. James Talarico as a thoughtful, reasonable moderate in the race for the United States Senate.
But when it comes to the Second Amendment, Texas gun owners should look past the carefully crafted image — and look at the record.
Because the record shows something very different.
During his time in the Texas House, Talarico has repeatedly sided with the gun confiscation cartel and supported policies that mirror the radical anti-gun agenda pushed in places like California and New York.
Talarico openly opposed Texas’ Constitutional Carry law, the landmark reform restoring the right of law-abiding Texans to carry a handgun without a permit.
He has also backed policies pushed nationwide by the gun confiscation agenda, including:
- Universal background checks
- “Red flag” gun confiscation laws
- Raising the legal age to purchase firearms to 21
In the Texas Legislature, Talarico also co-authored legislation that would impose new restrictions and regulatory burdens on handgun sales and concealed carry.
For gun owners, the pattern is clear.
“James Talarico claims to be a moderate, but he’s as radical as Gavin Newsom or even AOC.” said Texas Gun Rights President Chris McNutt.
The Stakes in the Senate Race
Talarico has now secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, setting up what could become one of the most consequential political battles in Texas.
On the Republican side, Attorney General Ken Paxton has emerged as a strong contender and is widely expected to win the May 26 runoff.
Paxton has built a reputation among gun owners as a defender of the Second Amendment, repeatedly using the Attorney General’s office to challenge federal overreach and defend constitutional rights in court.
His campaign has drawn a sharp contrast with longtime Senator John Cornyn, whose support for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act helped advance Joe Biden’s gun confiscation agenda.
Cornyn’s vote expanded federal involvement in red-flag-style programs and emboldened the ATF to pursue aggressive regulatory crackdowns on lawful gun owners.
For grassroots gun rights activists, the damage is not forgotten.
“John Cornyn stabbed gun owners in the back when he helped Biden pass the most significant gun control bill in decades,” McNutt said. “Texas gun owners remember exactly who stood with them — and who didn’t.”
A Clear Choice for Texas Gun Owners
As the Senate race heats up, Texas Gun Rights says it will continue exposing the records of candidates on both sides of the aisle.
Because the stakes for gun owners couldn’t be higher.
“One side is pushing the gun confiscation agenda,” McNutt said. “The other side is fighting to defend the Constitution.”
“And Texas gun owners deserve to know exactly who stands where.”
