Weatherford, TX — Governor Greg Abbott has reinforced Texas’ status as a growing stronghold for the Second Amendment, signing four major pro-gun bills into law before the veto deadline — including a Texas Gun Rights (TXGR) top priority bill, and legislation backed by Gun Owners of America (GOA) that was strongly supported by TXGR.
This marks one of the most successful legislative sessions for Texas gun owners in recent memory, with grassroots demanding more than symbolic victories.
SB 1362: Texas Builds a Wall Against Red Flag Tyranny
At the top of the list is SB 1362, a Texas Gun Rights flagship priority, championed by Sen. Bryan Hughes (R-Mineola) and Reps. Cole Hefner (R-Mount Pleasant) and Briscoe Cain (R-Deer Park).
The bill prohibits the recognition, enforcement, or service of Red Flag gun confiscation orders unless they are explicitly authorized under Texas law.
In other words: Texas will not allow out-of-state or federal Red Flag orders to strip Texans of their firearms without due process.
“This is a bold stand against weaponized courts and anonymous accusations,” said Chris McNutt, President of Texas Gun Rights. “It’s our top priority because no law-abiding Texan should lose their rights without ever being charged with a crime, including veterans who put their life on the line for our country.”
SB 1596: GOA-Authored, TXGR-Backed Repeal of SBR/SBS State Bans
Also signed into law is SB 1596, a GOA-drafted bill spearheaded by Sen. Brent Hagenbuch (R-Denton) and Rep. Richard Hayes (R-Lake Dallas). Texas Gun Rights strongly supported the legislation, which removes short-barreled rifles (SBRs) and shotguns (SBSs) from Texas’ list of prohibited weapons.
Although these firearms remain regulated under the federal National Firearms Act (NFA), Texas is no longer piling state-level penalties on top of federal restrictions—a major step in dismantling the decades-old framework of gun control.
McNutt praised the bill as “a necessary step toward ending the unconstitutional persecution of gun owners who dare to own what the ATF deems ‘scary-looking’ rifles.”
SB 1596 works in lock-step with TXGR-backed federal legislation to remove SBRs & SBSs from the NFA, which was recently added to the “Big Beautiful Bill” in the Senate.
Two More Bills Strengthening Second Amendment Protections
In addition to SB 1362 and SB 1596, Gov. Abbott also signed two other significant pro-gun measures:
SB 706, by Sen. Charles Schwertner (R-Georgetown) and Rep. Carrie Isaac (R-Dripping Springs), mandates universal recognition of out-of-state carry permits, aligning with Texas’ permitless carry stance and protecting lawful travelers.
HB 1403, by Rep. Cody Harris (R-Palestine) and Sen. Mayes Middleton (R-Galveston), protects foster parents from invasive government overreach by prohibiting state agencies from demanding detailed lists of firearms kept in the home — and ensures such information remains confidential.
Texas Stands Firm While D.C. Drags Feet
While the Trump administration continues to slowly dismantle the Biden-ATF bureaucracy (albeit not fast enough — gun owners demand immediate abolition!), Texas is mashing the gas pedal against unconstitutional schemes one bill at a time.
From the grassroots power of TXGR to the legislative muscle of GOA and other no-compromise groups like National Association for Gun Rights, this year’s victories were built not by lobbyists in D.C., but by patriots on the ground in Texas.
“This is what happens when you refuse to compromise,” McNutt said. “The Red Flag gun grab is stopped at the Texas border, and the NFA is being dismantled brick by brick.”
