The Trump administration has officially removed the 2024 Surgeon General’s advisory on gun violence, marking a major departure from Biden-era policies that sought to classify firearm ownership as a public health crisis.
The advisory, which was issued under former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy and opposed by Texas Gun Rights, pushed for treating gun violence as a disease and was widely seen as a Trojan horse for federal gun control measures.
With President Trump back in the White House, the removal of this advisory is one of many pro-gun moves that have taken place since his return to office.
The administration’s latest action signals a hard pivot away from Biden’s gun control agenda and a reaffirmation of Second Amendment rights at the highest levels of government.
Gun Control Lobby Furious Over Removal
Unsurprisingly, anti-gun groups are in full meltdown mode over the removal of the advisory.
Giffords, the gun control organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, attacked the decision, claiming it prioritizes “gun industry profits over protecting children and families.”
Everytown for Gun Safety and Brady United echoed similar sentiments, accusing the Trump administration of “ignoring public health experts” and dismantling policies aimed at reducing firearm-related deaths. But in reality, these groups never cared about public health—their mission has always been about disarming law-abiding Americans under the guise of “safety.”
Dave Warrington’s Influence in Trump’s Pro-Gun Agenda
The removal of this advisory is just one of many pro-gun actions taken since Trump’s re-election, and much of this shift can likely be credited to Dave Warrington.
In December, Warrington—a founding board member and former chairman of the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR)—was appointed as Trump’s Chief White House Counsel.
Warrington, who has also served as an attorney for Texas Gun Rights, has long been a fierce advocate for rolling back unconstitutional firearm restrictions. His presence in Trump’s inner circle is already yielding results with an ATF shake-up that includes Kash Patel becoming acting ATF director, the appointment of pro-gun Chief Counsel Robert Leider, and the ongoing push to repeal Biden-era executive actions on firearms.
A Clear Shift Back to Pro-Gun Policies
Under Biden, the federal government waged war on the Second Amendment, using health agencies to justify gun control.
The now-removed advisory framed gun ownership as a public health threat, opening the door for more regulations, restrictions, and backdoor confiscation schemes.
With its removal, Trump has made it clear that his administration will not allow unelected bureaucrats to infringe on gun rights under the guise of “public safety”.
The Biden administration tried to turn firearm ownership into a CDC-monitored “epidemic,” but the Trump White House is putting an end to these backdoor gun grabs.
The Fight Continues
While the removal of the advisory is a major win, gun owners cannot let up.
The anti-gun Left is regrouping, and they will push their agenda at the state level if they can’t get their way federally.
That’s why groups like TXGR and NAGR continue to fight for strong state-level protections and push for the ultimate goal: abolishing the ATF and dismantling federal gun control once and for all.
