Trump Was Shot with an AR-15. His Opinions Have Not Changed.

August 13, 2024

Despite being mere millimeters from death, President Donald J. Trump has not changed his position on the 2nd Amendment and gun rights following the assassination attempt on July 13th. If anything, it would appear as though his position on the right to bear arms has only gotten stronger.

Many left-wing pundits in the mainstream media have bemoaned Trump and other Republicans for supporting common ownership of the very firearm that was used with intent to kill the presidential candidate. During a lengthy press conference on August 8th, where President Trump sparred with biased and hostile journalists for over an hour straight, one reporter asked him if the assassination attempt, during which an AR-15 rifle shot Trump, changed his views on gun rights.

President Trump responded, “No, it didn’t.”

Like many other victims of gun violence, President Trump understands the need of all Americans for the right to self-defense. He further lambasted his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, for her radical and totalitarian positions on the 2nd Amendment.

Harris has previously called for and supported the confiscation of so-called “assault rifles.” Kamala has even applauded the mandatory buy-back of Australia and expressed a desire to see such a policy implemented in the United States. Although she and her campaign have toned down their rhetoric leading up to November, Kamala has consistently been expressing her plan to ban the sale of assault weapons should she assume the presidency. In addition, Kamala supports a federal gun registry and has been a consequently significant actor in the Radical Left’s push for “Red Flag” laws.

Trump elaborated on his support for 2nd Amendment rights, going rhetorically further than most politicians will dare in describing the true purpose of gun ownership. “People need guns for protection,” Trump stated after calling out his opponent’s flirtation with gun confiscation. The people do indeed need guns for protection, especially in such a tumultuous time as the present day. Gun ownership is not solely about hunting, as many politicians will attest. Nor was the 2nd Amendment purely about sport or activity, but rather the God-given right to self-defense and protection from tyranny.

President Trump’s choice of JD Vance as his running mate was another sign of his dedication to gun owners. When running for the Senate in Ohio, Vance promised to secure the rights of his constituents to purchase and maintain ownership of firearms while simultaneously calling out the failures of both “gun-free-zones” and various other gun control policies. He also championed the need for self-defense among the American people, explicitly calling out the soft-on-crime prosecutors throughout the country who have made streets unnecessarily dangerous and left many Americans’ fates at the mercy of vicious criminals.

Taking everything into account, it appears that President Trump is stronger on the issue of gun rights than ever before. He has received the endorsement of many gun rights advocacy groups, including us here at Texas Gun Rights. Considering that the opposition frontrunner is perhaps the most ardently anti-2nd Amendment candidate that the United States has ever seen and has promised to use federal power to decimate the rights of millions of Americans, there has never been so much at stake.
